Destination Kohler & Whistling Straits

Ryder Cup golf on the Lake Michigan bluffs — Pete Dye's masterworks with five-star polish.

The place

Pete Dye built four courses for the Kohler company and every one of them matters. The Straits heaves along two miles of Lake Michigan bluffs — walking only, caddies required, a thousand bunkers, and the stage for the 2021 Ryder Cup and three PGA Championships. The Irish course beside it is its windswept sibling, while inland at Blackwolf Run the River and Meadow Valleys courses share a U.S. Women's Open pedigree. Between rounds: the American Club's restaurants and legendary spa, and The Baths par-3 complex for evening games. It is the trip for a crew that wants major-championship turf under their own spikes.

Why it wins

The most decorated golf address in the Midwest: the Straits has hosted PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup, Blackwolf Run has hosted U.S. Women's Opens, and the American Club wraps it all in five-diamond comfort. Major-venue bragging rights, one gate.

Booking notes

Resort guests get tee-time priority across all four courses — book the Straits round first and build the trip around it. The Straits is walking-only with a caddie; budget for it and tip well. Peak-season weekends book out far in advance.
