Bridport, Australia

Barnbougle, Tasmania

Wild dunes at the bottom of the world — Doak and Coore-Crenshaw side by side on Bass Strait.

The place

On a working farm on Tasmania's empty north coast, two of the modern game's best courses stare each other down across a river mouth. Barnbougle Dunes — Tom Doak with Michael Clayton, 2004 — put Tasmania on the world golf map with its heaving dunes above Bass Strait; Lost Farm, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw's twenty-hole reply, is every bit its equal in the nightly argument. Bougle Run, Coore's fourteen-hole short course, settles the side bets at sunset. It is remote, windswept, walking-only golf of the highest order — the pilgrimage that pays off.

Where you crash

The resort

Lost Farm Lodge & Dunes Cottages

Barnbougle's own beds — lodge rooms above Lost Farm with Bass Strait views, and cottages tucked behind the Dunes' first tee.

◆ The private house

The Farmhouse Estate

A coastal farmhouse outside Bridport — wood stove, a long table for the trip dinner, paddocks running to the sea and the golf ten minutes away.

The 5-day plan

  1. 1

    Hop, drive, short-course opener

AM Morning hop from Melbourne to Launceston, then the easy drive to Bridport.

PM Bougle Run to wake the legs up; first farm dinner and an early night.

  2. 2

    The Dunes

AM Doak's original through the big sandhills — wind is a playing partner.

PM Optional second loop for the possessed; oysters and pinot at the lodge.

  3. 3

    Lost Farm

AM Coore and Crenshaw's twenty holes across the river.

PM The extra two holes settle a grudge match; the Dunes-vs-Lost-Farm debate rages over dinner.

  4. 4

    Cup day, captain's pick

AM The team match on whichever course won the argument.

PM Trophy dinner at the lodge, then Bougle Run under the sunset to close the books.

  5. 5

Dawn nine & the hop home

AM A last dawn loop or farmhouse breakfast, then Launceston for the hop to Melbourne and the flight home.

Why it wins

The purest golf-immersion trip on the map: two world-ranked links and a brilliant short course on one remote coastal farm, walking golf all day, farm-table dinners and Tasmanian pinot at night — and nothing else for miles, by design.

Booking notes

Cross the Pacific to Melbourne or Sydney (14–16 hours nonstop from the West Coast), hop an hour to Launceston (LST), then drive fifty easy minutes to Bridport — rent a van at the airport, there's no other way around. Book lodging and tee times together through Barnbougle; December–March is peak and summer weekends go early. The courses are built for walking — trolleys and caddies over carts.
