A glacial lakebed in central Wisconsin turned out to hide hundreds of feet of pure sand, and Sand Valley grew out of it into the Midwest's marquee golf destination. Coore and Crenshaw's original sprawls across exposed barrens, David McLay Kidd's Mammoth Dunes plays huge and joyful, and Tom Doak's Sedge Valley compresses the fun into a clever par 68. The Sandbox par-3 course keeps every evening competitive, on-site cottages and lodge rooms put the crew a walk from the first tee, and the whole property runs on caddies, firm turf and fescue.
