Graeagle, CA

Graeagle & the Lost Sierra

A tiny mountain town ringed by golf — the Sierra's best-kept buddy-trip secret.

cool-summer-airmountain-golftiny-town-charmvalue-sleeper

The place

Graeagle is a former lumber company town — red cabins, one general store, a mill pond — sitting in a Sierra valley that happens to be ringed by more good golf than towns fifty times its size. The Dragon at Nakoma brings the drama, with a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed clubhouse as its centerpiece; Grizzly Ranch and Whitehawk Ranch wind through the pines; Graeagle Meadows runs along the Feather River in the middle of town. Summer days sit in the 70s while the valleys bake. Evenings are porch beers, horseshoes and steaks — the unplugged trip on this list.

Where you crash

The resort

Nakoma Resort

Lodge rooms and villas at the Dragon — spa, pool and the Wright clubhouse's restaurant, all wrapped in high-Sierra quiet.

◆ The private house

The Private House

A big cabin in or around Graeagle — wraparound porch, horseshoe pit, firepit under the pines, and every course inside twenty minutes. The classic move is renting two neighboring cabins on the mill pond.

Why it wins

An hour from the Reno airport, the Lost Sierra hides a cluster of quality mountain courses around a one-street lumber town — cool summer air, pine-lined fairways, cabin porches and green fees that feel like a different decade. The definition of a sleeper pick.

Booking notes

Fly into Reno and drive about an hour northwest. Courses are small operations — book directly and confirm shoulder-season schedules, as some tracks shorten hours outside mid-summer. Cabin inventory around Graeagle books out for July weekends.
