Sotogrande, Spain

Costa del Sol & Sotogrande

Ryder Cup ground in the cork oaks — Valderrama, Sotogrande and villa nights on Spain's sun coast.

andalusian-nightsrtj-classicsryder-cup-groundvilla-luxury

The place

The quiet end of Spain's sun coast hides its most serious golf. Valderrama — cork oaks, tiny targets, and the stage for Seve's triumphant 1997 Ryder Cup captaincy — remains the most exacting round in continental Europe, and a limited number of visitor times make it a genuine bucket-lister. Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s seaside Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is its restored, quietly magnificent elder; Finca Cortesin hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup and pairs its immaculate fairways with one of Europe's great hotels. White villages, late dinners and villa pools carry the hours in between.

Why it wins

The chance to play the 1997 Ryder Cup course headlines a lineup of Robert Trent Jones classics and a Solheim Cup host — wrapped in Sotogrande villa living, Andalusian dinners and near-guaranteed sunshine.

Booking notes

Fly into Málaga (AGP) — one stop through Madrid, Lisbon or a European hub, with occasional US seasonal nonstops — then drive an hour southwest to Sotogrande. A van or driver covers it; the core courses sit within twenty minutes. Valderrama releases a small number of visitor times daily at a collector's-item fee — book months ahead and treat it as the trip's centerpiece; Real Club Sotogrande holds midweek visitor windows. Dinner in Andalusia starts at nine — plan the tee sheet accordingly.
